no doubt about it Your work is superb--I live in Australia & mostly the Wood Carvers around here don't paint their carvings--we usually just join together different colours & grains to create the colours needed

No actually Intarsia I know & have done some--for instance if I wanted to carve a duck [in the round] I would glue a piece of brown wood as a head then white wood for a neck then grey brown for the back --dark brown for the wings-- white for the belly & red wood for the legs & feet--& then carve the duck that way there is no need for painting--or some carvings are just some nice maple pink or red cedar with wide grain lines & no variation of colour at all unless sapwood heartwood combinations are used
